Get rid of unused desktop shortcuts
It takes time for your PC to find the desktop shortcut icons when it boots up. So, if you don't need to access a shortcut every day, delete it by right-clicking on the icon and choosing delete. This won't remove the program from your computer, just the shortcut to it. You can still access the program by clicking the Start menu and selecting All Programs.
Organize files with folders
If you don't need all those individual files, pictures and MP3s on your desktop, start categorizing them into folders to clear desktop clutter. Microsoft® Windows® come with folders labeled My Documents, My Photos and My Music to help organize your files accordingly.
Delete unused files
Go through the contents of your existing folders and delete any duplicate files or those you no longer use.
Remove old and unused software
If you've never used a particular software program that came with your PC or haven't used it in over a year, consider deleting it.
There are 2 simple ways to delete software programs:
- Go to your PC's control panel:
- Click Start, click Control Panel.
- Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
- Use the software program's Uninstall feature.
A clutter-free hard drive
By following the steps above, you'll be well on your way to maintaining a healthier hard drive and PC.
