The SMART-2 Array Controller is based on an Intelligent I/O Architecture which enables truly breakthrough capabilities for managing high performance storage:
On-Line Capacity Expansion: Simplifies storage management by allowing on-line addition of more storage in RAID configurations, eliminating the need to
back-up, reconfigure, and restore
Array Configuration Utility: Graphical user interface which simplifies array configuration and facilitates on-line capacity expansion
Array Performance Monitor: Monitors key parameters (with Compaq Insight Manager) and provides information for proactive system planning.
Performance
Multiple components integrated into a single controller ensure continuous high-performance system access with ensured fault tolerance:
Host Interface: 32-bit EISA or PCI bus-master technology delivers maximum data burst performance, transfering information directly to system memory at rates
up to 133 MB/s (PCI); enhanced command interface reduces command latency and maximizes transfer rates
Intelligent Array Engines: Processing tasks are divided between two engines; working simultaneously, one engine generates fault tolerance information and
manages data flow while the other prepares and sorts array storage commands
Fast-Wide SCSI-2 Channels: Two Fast-Wide SCSI-2 channels double drive channel bandwidth to
40 MB/s (20 MB/s per channel), and provide over 300 GB of high-availability storage per server
Enhanced Array Accelerator: 4-MB ECC-protected and battery-backed removable read/write cache maximizes I/O performance without sacrificing data integrity;
prediction of sequential operations and retrieval of data prior to a request further enhances performance
Data Distribution/Accessibility: Data is distributed across multiple drives (up to 14), optimizing drive efficiency and performance; multiple commands and
requests for information are processed simultaneously across drives with Tagged Command Queuing, contributing to an overall performance of up to 20 percent
faster than other SCSI implementations
Fault Prevention
Allows detection of possible failures before they occur, allowing preventive action to be taken:
Drive Parameter Tracking: Monitors over 15 drive operational parameters, predicting failures and notifying administrator
Dynamic Sector Repairing: Continually scans hard drives and automatically remaps bad sectors, ensuring data integrity
Array Accelerator Tracking: Monitors integrity of Array Accelerator Cache, allowing pre-failure preventive maintenance
Environment Tracking for ProLiant Storage System: Monitors fan and cabinet temperature of ProLiant Storage System
Fault Tolerance
Proactively duplicates data prior to a possible drive failure and keeps data available and server running while drive is being replaced; several fault tolerance
configurations are supported including:
Distributed Data Guarding (RAID 5): Allocates parity data across multiple drives and allows simultaneous write operations
Data Guarding (RAID 4): Writes parity data to a single, designated drive
Drive Mirroring (RAID 1): Allocates half of the drive array to mirroring the other half, providing two copies of every file
Fault Recovery
Minimizes downtime, reconstructs data, and facilitates a quick recovery from drive failure:
On-Line Spares: Up to four spare drives can be installed prior to drive failure; if a failure occurs, the failed drive is immediately replaced with a spare and data is
reconstructed automatically
Array Accelerator: On-board battery backup of buffered memory for up to four days, protecting data in the event of a power failure; Bypass Mode allows the
SMART-2 Controller to operate with a failed or removed Array Accelerator
Hot-Pluggable Drive Support
Supports hot-pluggable drives, allowing drives to be removed or added without powering down the server
Storage Capacity
Two Fast-Wide SCSI-2 channels allow support for up to fourteen Fast-SCSI-2 or Fast-Wide SCSI-2 drives, delivering a maximum storage capacity of over 60 GB
per controller; with the SMART-2 Controller, external storage capacity is maximized on Compaq servers
