Overview
Seagate Software works closely with Novell to optimize Seagate Backup Exec for enterprise-wide NetWare data protection, making it the safest, most reliable solution available. Engineered to deliver safe, reliable, full-featured network backup, Seagate Backup Exec will keep pace with your network’s changing needs, while maximizing your investment. Through joint engineering efforts with Compaq, Seagate Backup Exec adds enterprise class support, allowing users to share secondary storage devices among many servers, lowering a company’s total cost of ownership (TCO) and improving network performance. With Novell’s Storage Management Services (SMS) support, Seagate Backup Exec protects NetWare 3 and 4 servers, and will protect future generations of NetWare. Also, in the event of a hardware failure, Seagate Backup Exec’s fault-tolerant processing automatically re-routes jobs to an alternate tape drive or backup server.

Seagate Backup Exec for NetWare simplifies and automates enterprise-wide backup, with extensive multi-platform support. Seagate Backup Exec fully protects NetWare, Windows NT and LAN servers, as well as DOS, Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT, Macintosh, OS/2 and UNIX workstations. Seagate Backup Exec offers unmatched reliability for enterprise-wide data protection.

Key Features

  • Provides Storage Management Service (SMS) support - Full SMS compatibility provides scaleable growth capabilities to meet your network’s changing needs, no matter how complex they may become.
  • Protects NetWare data and namespace information - Provides comprehensive data protection - including all objects and containers within NetWare Directory Services (NDS) and extended schema.
  • Automatically reroutes backup jobs - Fault-tolerant backup processing maintains backup integrity by rerouting backup jobs in the event of system, media or device error.
  • Optimizes backup performance - Seagate Backup Exec helps manage a maximum of 28-jobs simultaneously, with automatic redirection to the next available tape for a maximum data protection performance.
  • Reduces backup time - STAC LZS data compression and Seagate Software’s exclusive Agent Accelerator technology make Backup Exec the fastest data protection solution for your NetWare network.
  • Enhanced AutoLoader Support - An add on option is available for Backup Exec for NetWare providing supports for all of Compaq Tape Libraries and bar code support for high speed inventory process.

Competitive Advantage Across the Market

  • Support for Tape Alert™ technology - For supported tape drives and autoloaders, the drive can communicate directly with Backup Exec and inform the user when the drive is operating in a degraded state, but has not yet failed. This increases reliability of the backup process by predicting failures before they actually occur and decreases administrator burden by allowing them to plan hardware maintenance before the problem becomes critical.
  • Support of full line of Compaq tape storage devices - Please refer to our latest hardware compatibility document for a complete list of supported Compaq hardware.
  • Support for IBM ADSM (Option) - This feature allows Backup Exec to operate with IBM’s ADSM system for data storage, providing mainframe-level hardware protection of user data, while still maintaining administration and control of the backup process at the server level.
  • Support for Low Admin Backup Mode (LABM) - LABM totally automates weekly backups in single server environments using a tape auto-loader to provide reliable, hands-off backup, with automatic error recovery, automatic head cleaning and automated tape management.

Software Options and Agents

Seagate Backup Exec Options - Seagate Backup Exec combines built-in capabilities with optional support-enabling you to meet the challenges of network growth, data protection and storage management with the following products:

Seagate Backup Exec Shared Storage Option - Provides robust, centralized backup within a distributed environment. Designed to function as an integrated component of the Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS), the Shared Storage Option allows multiple distributed backup servers to share common, centralized storage devices for greater cost efficiency and fault tolerance. At the same time, each backup server can initiate its own backups and restorations regardless of the state of the other backup servers.

Seagate Backup Exec Intelligent Disaster Recovery™ Option - Provides fast, reliable and easy-to-use recovery for your server after hardware or system failure. Seagate Software recognizes time is critical when your server is down and our Backup Exec Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option can help you rebuild your server. With a minimum of user input, whether it’s a single failed disc drive or an entire server.

Seagate Backup Exec Advanced AutoLoader Option for NetWare-  Is a powerful add-on feature that significantly enhances your data protection capabilities, for truly unattended backup operations. The Advanced AutoLoader Module enables you to establish groups of tapes within the device magazine, thus enabling you to direct data to user-defined groups. You can identify groups of tapes with user-defined names and segment data backups for enterprise-wide and user-directed backups.

Open File Manager™ Option - Provides uninterrupted data protection for network environments that must remain accessible 24 hours-a-day/7-days-a-week. Using an innovative approach to open file backup, Open File Manager provides protection for active e-mail, database and other data files even while information is being entered or changed by users - for guaranteed data security, integrity and reliability. Designed to be fully NetWare compatible - Open File Manager runs at the operating system level.

Seagate Back Exec IBM ADSM Option - Allows network administrators to access the full line of IBM mid-range/mainframe hardware and Advanced Data Storage Management software through Seagate Backup Exec’s NetWare and Window NT solutions. Seagate Backup Exec uses the ADSM system as a large data storage device and allows backups to be automatically routed to the ADSM system just as if it were a large tape library or autoloader. Multiple servers and workstations can all be protected using the ADSM option and any number of Backup Exec systems can simultaneously connect to one ADSM system. It requires support for ADSF v2.0 or later and ADSM v2.0 or later.
