This model is the only Compaq SAN Switch that comes with a set of rack mounting rails,
allowing the unit to fit within a 1.5U rack space. |
| |
| What is Storage Services Bundling? |
| The Storage Services Bundling takes the
existing storage products along with the existing services and creates bundles of storage
hardware/software and appropriate services. The increased level of support provides for a
higher level of storage system availability for the customer. |
| |
| Overview |
Compaqs newest introduction for
creating the SAN infrastructure is the StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN
Switch 16-EL by Compaq. This unit joins the SAN Switch 8-EL as an economical, but robust,
device for the price-sensitive customer looking for the market leader in
price/performance.
The Fibre Channel SAN Switch 16-EL has all the high-performance functionality of
Compaqs 16-port SAN switch with fewer high-availability features in a cost reduced,
entry-level, full-fabric switch. All ports are based on hot pluggable GBICs, ready to
accept short-wave or long-wave interfaces to cover distances up to 500 meters or up to 10
kilometers. All ports are also configurable as E-ports for switch-to-switch connectivity.
The Fibre Channel SAN Switch 16-EL is an excellent choice for connecting edge devices to a
larger SAN fabric or for constructing low-cost, full-fabric SANs. |

| Key Features |
| High-performance Storage Area (SAN) switch
fabric for StorageWorks Modular Array 8000, StorageWorks Enterprise Modular
Array 12000 storage system StorageWorks Modular Array 16000, MSA1000, and
Enterprise Virtual Array at an entry-level price The StorageWorks Fibre
Channel SAN Switch16-EL is a high-performance, scalable, fabric switch designed for
creating SANs with StorageWorks subsystems. It is a key component of
Compaqs Enterprise Network Storage Architecture (ENSA). Major features of this new
fabric switch include: |
- Sixteen 1-Gb/s non-blocking Fibre Channel connections for high data throughput.
- Each port will accept either long- or short-wave optical GBICs.
- Pre-configured with Fabric operating software, Web-based Management Tools, Zoning
software.
- Dynamic path rerouting in the event of a link failure.
- Support for interconnecting (cascading) up to six switches together for larger SANs.
- General 10-kilometer link distance support for switch to switch connections.
- Multiple methods for switch management.
- Backward compatibility between with currently shipping Fibre Channel SAN switches.
- Automatic data routing and re-routing, self-healing, and almost unlimited scalability.
- With a height of only 1.5U, it ships with special rack mounting rails included. (It is
the only Compaq switch that has this feature.)

| Product Highlights |
| Capacity |
| Sixteen 1 Gb ports support long or short
wavelength hot pluggable GBICs (not included). |
| |
| Compatibility Testing |
| Backward compatible with all Compaq Fibre
Channel fabric switches |
| |
| Fault Recovery |
| Power-On Self-Test (POST) and online
diagnostics perform thorough port-level testing while the switch is running. Per-port
statistics help in diagnosing and isolating problem ports. Any port can be removed from a
loop, and the switch will continue to operate. Embedded facilities automatically disable
failing ports. They are automatically disabled and restarted once the problem has cleared. |
| |
| Manageability |
| Web management, SWCC Support |
| |
| Serviceability |
| SAN Switch 16-EL is a field replaceable unit.
There are no individually serviceable parts. |
| |
| Warranty Information |
| 3 years parts, 1 year on-site, next business
day response |
| |
| Rack Density |
| 1.5 U (2.6˛ ) |
| |
| Configuration versatility |
- "Universal Ports" self-configure to the type of device connected to them. They
automatically detect a fabric-attached device (F port), a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop
(FC-AL) attached device (FL port), or another StorageWorks Fibre Channel SAN
Switch (E port).
- A unique translative addressing allows private loop devices to be addressed by fabric
attached devices.
|
| |
| Hot pluggable, industry-standard GBIC (Gigabit
Interface Converter) |
- Short-wave GBIC supports distances up to 500 meters between server and switch, and
between storage subsystem and switch, using multi-mode fiber optic cable.
- Long-wave GBIC supports distances of up to 10 kilometers between switches using
single-mode fiber optic cable.
- New Fibre Channel SAN Switches use the same GBICs and cabling as previous Fibre Channel
switches.
|
| |
| Zoning software enables creations of
multiple "logical" SANs within a switch fabric |
- Zone members only see other members of the zone.
- Devices may belong to more than one zone.
- Zones may be configured dynamically.
|
| |
| Easy switch management |
Administrative functions take place from an
existing LAN based system or locally in the SAN itself. Supported management methods
include:
- SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol).
- Telnet.
- Web-based Management tools, launched via StorageWorks Command Console.
- Telnet command subset via switch front panel display (Fibre Channel SAN Switch/16 only).
|
| |
| Disaster resilience and Scalability |
- Two switches can be interconnected and separated from each other by up to 10 kilometers.
- Support for multiple connections between switches for higher bandwidth and redundancy
- Switch fabric automatically determines the most efficient path between server and
storage end points and dynamically reroutes data to an alternate path in the event of an
interruption.
