Linux and Tru64 UNIX Portability Tools Version 5.3

Introduction

The Linux and Tru64™ UNIX Portability Tools include software development tools for both Linux and HP Tru64 UNIX systems. These tools enable:

  • Interoperability within a heterogeneous environment
  • Application mobility across platforms
  • A common application development environment

For information about the HP Linux and Tru64 UNIX Affinity Program, see the Linux and Tru64 UNIX Affinity White Paper included with the Portability Tools at the following Web site: http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/affinity.

The toolset includes:

  • OpenOffice.org – A multiplatform office productivity suite, including a word processor, spreadsheet program, presentation manager, and drawing program. This suite can import and export Microsoft Office file formats.
  • liblx.so Library – A Linux compatibility library to aid in porting Open Source applications to Tru64 UNIX.
  • GNOME and KDE – Early Adopter Kits (EAKs) for the GNOME Version 1.4 desktop (including developer's platform) and KDE Version 3.0.1 desktop, including all the internationalization components, libraries, utilities, Koffice, and others. These components are built using HP compilers for enhanced performance. Users can make simple modifications to their .xsession startup files to use either GNOME or KDE as their default desktop. Example: .xsession files are included with the distribution and can be copied to the user's home directory.
  • Red Hat GnuPro Software Development Tools – Specifically built for the Tru64 UNIX Version 5.1 or higher family of releases.
    • GCC (GNU C Compiler)
    • G++ (GNU C++ Compiler)
    • BINUTILS (GNU Binary Utilities)
    • GDB (GNU Debugger)
    • LIBSTDC++ (GNU C++ Standard Library Compiler)
  • Binary Emulation Package – Rehosting applications for which the source is not readily available are supported with an EAK Linux Alpha to Tru64 UNIX binary emulation package, lxt64. This package allows users to take applications built with shared objects on Linux Alpha systems and run them directly on a Tru64 UNIX system.
  • Code Forge IDE (30-Day Trial) – An IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that supports Tru64 UNIX as well as Linux on AlphaServer™ and ProLiant™ systems. This complete IDE provides project management software and complete edit, compile, and debug support for developers using a wide variety of programming languages and compilers, including Compaq C and C++. Code Forge for Tru64 UNIX and Linux Alpha systems is compiled using HP C compilers. For Linux Intel systems, it is compiled using gcc. This software has a built-in expiration 30 days after installation.
  • Solaris Compatibility Libraries – All libraries are available for Tru64 UNIX. Only the Solaris Compatibility Threads library is available for Linux systems. The supported functionality falls into three categories:
    • Solaris Threads – An implementation of Solaris thread functions layered upon POSIX threads
    • Remote Procedure Calls – A port of Sun's public domain ONC RPC Version 2.3 software
    • Miscellaneous – Various library functions including asynchronous I/O, large file support, wide character, and signal name functions
  • Desktop Manager – An HP developed tool that enables users to select a desktop (KDE, GNOME, or CDE ) at login time.

Installation

The Linux and Tru64 UNIX Portability Tools include an installation procedure that simplifies the steps required to install individual components. See the customer letter for specific installation instructions.

Read the online Read This First (00README.txt) and component Release Notes documents before installing the software. You can access these documents on the Linux and Tru64 UNIX Portability Tools CD-ROMs.

Disk Space Requirements
Maximum required /usr file system disk space is approximately 1.3 GB for a full installation of all components.

  • RPM Install (Binaries) requires 985 MB (/usr/local: 565 MB, /usr/opt: 420 MB)
  • Sources require 350 MB

NOTE: This count refers to the disk space required on the /usr system partition. The sizes are approximate; actual sizes might vary depending on the user's system environment, configuration, and software options. Additional disk space might be required to create or expand component databases or create user files as components are used.

Source Code Information

Source code is included for the Portability Tools software on the binary kit except for the Code Forge IDE (30-day trial).
