Linux SupportCompaq continues to work with Red Hat to ensure that support for the most common peripherals is native within the Linux operating system kernel. The Red Hat Linux Support web site provides a list of embedded driver support for their latest Linux distributions. For Compaq ProLiant and Prosignia models certified, specific device drivers and software are available from http://www.compaq.com/support/files/server/us/index.html and ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/drivers/linux.Compaq will continue to work with multiple Linux distributions to provide enterprise customers with optimal choices and improve the level of Linux support offered for Compaq server products. Hardware support is generally provided directly from the sub-component hardware manufacturers (e.g. ATI, Intel, and Matrox), and specific device drivers are often available from the Linux community via web sites, newsgroups, and other electronic mediums. Although there exists no official or central support group for the Linux operating system, the Linux community offers its own technical support through the use of news groups, Internet Relay Chat (IRC), web sites, and e-mail. Certain Linux package providers, such as Red Hat, also offer technical support services and packages.
ServicesCompaq Services offers technical support for various distributions of the Linux operating system around the world. Best-endeavor technical support is available world wide for Red Hat Linux during regular business hours 9 hours per day (8:00 am to 5:00 pm local time), five days a week for Compaq Intel and Alpha hardware platforms. In North America, Compaq offers up through Business Critical support, featuring 24 x 7 coverage and fastest response times for problem reporting and resolution.Designed to support the open source model, Linux Software Support is available in 10-incident packs and is available from Compaq service reseller partners and direct from Compaq. In North America, annual contracts and custom quotes are available as well. In addition, the Compaq forum (forum.compaq.com) contains a message board of useful installation support resources. Compaq's strategy supports certification of all Linux versions regardless of the source, and our Services group will continue to evaluate other distributions. Currently, RedHat support is available worldwide. Additionally, SuSE Linux support is available in EMEA, TurboLinux support is available in Japan, and Red Flag Linux support is available in China. Beyond the operating system distribution support, Customer Service currently provides support for key technologies and applications that run Linux. Apache, the most popular Linux-based web server application, is supported at the Best Endeavor level in Japan and at the Business Critical level in North America. The same is true of Beowulf, the clustering technology which creates high performance clusters of Linux systems.
