SMI-S Overview

In 2002, the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) launched the Storage Management Initiative (SMI), chartered to deliver open storage network management interface technology, known as the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). The goal of SNIA is to have "all storage managed by the SMI interface," as the unifying factor between all objects that must be managed in a storage area network and the tools used to manage them.

SNIA believes that SMI-S will streamline the way the entire storage industry deals with management. Efficient management of a multi-vendor storage area network (SAN) is a key concern for end-users and integrators alike. Today's management requires using uncoordinated applications from multiple vendors. These lack the required functionality, distribution, security, and reliability to ensure delivery of business efficiency. Ultimately, the high cost of management deters the end user from aggressively embracing storage networking technology. SMI-S is intended to be the unifying factor between the vast objects that must be managed in a storage network and the tools used to manage them.

HP Products Supporting SMI-S

SNIA's Conformance Test Program (CTP) ensures compliance with industry-standard specifications as defined in the SMI-S document. HP is proud to be among the storage industry leaders whose hardware and software products have achieved CTP certification in support of the SMI-S standard and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). To see a list of the HP products that are CTP certified go to http://www.snia.org/ctp/conformingproviders/hp.
